Motown once opened a Los Angeles outpost called Mowest, and it went so badly that the label folded it within a couple of years. Buried in the wreckage: Odyssey, a seven-piece folk-funk band — three lead singers, among them Kathleen Warren on piano and vibes — who made one self-titled album in 1972 and vanished. “Our Lives Are Shaped by What We Love” was its single, and it’s the kind of record that makes you wonder what else got lost in that filing cabinet.

It floats somewhere between Laurel Canyon and Hitsville: West Coast session players and a spacey, sun-warmed sensibility on top of a proper Motown bottom. Nobody bought it at the time. Collectors did the accounting later — original 45s now change hands for serious money, and when the reissue label Light in the Attic compiled the whole Mowest story in 2011, they named the entire compilation after this song. A fair verdict, delivered forty years late.
