Nobody can tell you much about Doris & Kelley, and that’s part of the spell. One 45 on Brunswick in 1967 — “You Don’t Have to Worry,” with “Groove Me With Your Lovin’” on the flip — and then the trail goes quiet. What’s left is three minutes of soul so easy and assured you’d swear they made twenty albums.

The single, produced by Mike Lewis and Stuart Wiener, drew little notice on release; decades later it resurfaced the way these records do now, passed hand to hand by collectors and YouTube uploads. When a soul blog posted it in 2014 and asked if anyone knew anything about the duo, a commenter identifying himself as Herman Kelley wrote back — glad the song had found new ears, and calling it a record with “a resurrection spirit of it’s own.” Sic, and amen.
