Running away is easy, it’s the leaving that’s hard

BADBADNOTGOOD first crossed paths with Sam Herring in 2014, when the Toronto trio reworked Future Islands’ “Seasons (Waiting on You)”. They liked each other enough to invite him up to their studio, and “Time Moves Slow” came out of those sessions — the Future Islands frontman trading his famous stage growl for a bruised, low croon over the band’s slowest, saddest soul groove.

It landed on IV in 2016, the album where the band opened its doors to a roomful of guests, and it’s the one everybody walked away humming. The drums drag just behind the beat, the bass barely moves, and Herring circles the same wound until he finds the line that gives this entry its title: “running away is easy, it’s the leaving that’s hard.” Put it on late, when the day has slowed down to match it.
